ENVIRONMENT LONG-TERM

ENVIRONMENT LONG-TERM COMMITMENT The rainforest campaign in 2002 was the beginning of a long series of environmental protection projects that we started and still accompany today. In addition to our Rainforest Project, we are also involved in climate protection, species conservation and nature conservation in our home region and throughout Germany. All projects have one thing in common: they are designed for the long-term! We go on! ARE THERE ANY NEWS FROM THE KROMBACHER RAINFOREST PROJECT? Almost 20 years after the start of the Krombacher Regenwald-Projekt (Krombacher Rainforest Project), WWF draws an extraordinarily successful interim conclusion: the forest stocks and the overall biodiversity in the project area in Dzanga Sangha remain stable. The animal population, e.g. of forest elephants and lowland gorillas, has fortunately developed positively. DID YOU KNOW? The area of our Rainforest Project is home to a wide variety of animals. Among them is a group of gorillas that had two offsprings last year: the two males Mossika and Bokoya. This is a sign that the population is recovering well. 18 18

HOW ARE YOU INVOLVED IN YOUR HOME REGION? Together with (local) partners, we have been working for nature conservation in Germany for many years. We support numerous projects to preserve nature, habitats and biodiversity. Right next to our brewery, together with NABU and the University of Siegen, we are bringing the Krombachtal valley back to life and create a nearnatural, valuable ecosystem. In this way, we are making an important contribution to biodiversity directly at our location. DO YOU SUPPORT PROJECTS FOR THE FOREST IN GERMANY? The forest shapes our homeland, so its protection and preservation is particularly important to us. „Planting today for tomorrow“ - that is the central idea behind our forest projects. Rising temperatures, lower precipitation, long dry periods and a historic infestation of pests by the bark beetle have dramatically affected our native forests. A large proportion of spruce stands have already had to be felled, resulting in veritable „moonscapes“ (so-called calamities). Therefore, we have started reforestation projects together with various forest enterprises and forest cooperatives, in order to develop sustainable deciduous and mixed forests. In Winterberg, a total of 22,000 deciduous trees were planted in October 2021. Together with our partner SV Darmstadt 98, we have planted over 4,000 trees in a campaign with players and soccer fans. Forests are enormously important as habitat for many animals, for the water balance and for climate protection. 19 19
